Student Scores in GRE Test

GRE Coaching

Candidates who are applying for a graduate program other than those offered by the School of Business are required to take the GRE. For example, students applying for Engineering, Computer Science, Psychology, Literature, Sciences etc. all require students to take the GRE. However, now an increasing number of business schools are also accepting scores from the GRE test.

The GRE general test measures the skills that you have acquired over the high school and college years. While the GRE is only one of the several criteria that graduate schools use to evaluate your application, it is one of the most important. This is particularly true if your college GPA is not as high as the university requires. The GRE General Test contains sections that measure verbal, quantitative and analytical writing skills.

The GRE exam has three sections:

Analytical Writing, Verbal Reasoning, and Quantitative Reasoning.

GRE Sections:

  • Analytical Writing: This section measures a student's ability to analyze and articulate complex ideas and arguments, as well as their ability to support their ideas with relevant examples and evidence.
  • Verbal Reasoning: This section is designed to measure a student's ability to analyze and evaluate written material, as well as their ability to synthesize information and draw conclusions.
  • Quantitative Reasoning: This section is designed to measure a student's ability to reason quantitatively and solve problems using mathematical concepts.

The GRE exam is administered on a computer, and the questions are adaptive, meaning that the difficulty level of the questions adjusts based on your performance.

The total exam time is approximately 3 hours and 45 minutes, including breaks.

GRE Exam Structure

Analytical Writing score reported on a 0-6 score scale, in half-point increments

Effective from November 1st, 2022, the Educational Testing Services (ETS) has introduced a new set of GRE exam fees. For the year 2023, the GRE exam fee in India is $228 or ₹18,857.

Quantitative Reasoning

Each quantitative reasoning section (also commonly called the "GRE Math section") contains a mix of multiple choice, quantitative analysis, and user input questions. Areas such as arithmetic, algebra, plane and co-ordinate geometry, statistics, probability etc. are covered but advanced and specialized topics such as trigonometry and calculus are not.

Verbal Reasoning

Each section includes a mix of reading comprehension, text completion, and sentence equivalence questions. Reading comprehension questions are either single answer, multiple answers, or select in passage, while text completion questions will have either one, two, or three blanks. On the other hand, Sentence Equivalence is a question type for which each test taker will have to choose 2 options as the right answer. Text completion and Sentence Equivalence questions test knowledge of vocabulary and reasoning ability.

Analytical Writing

The writing section of the GRE is meant to measure a student's analytical reasoning, organization, and analysis skills. The two essays include an issue essay and an argument essay. There are no right or wrong answers to the essay questions, and the essays will be read and scored by 2 (and possibly 3) readers.

Experimental Section

An experimental section that will either be a math or a verbal section may also be included on the exam. You will know if you are given a math or verbal experimental section because you will have three of those sections during the test, but you won't know which of the three identical sections is experimental.

GRE Subject Tests

In addition to the GRE General Test, graduate departments at some universities want applicants to take the GRE Subject Tests. The GRE Subject Tests are designed to test the knowledge a student learned about various subjects as an undergraduate student. GRE Subject Tests cover 16 subjects: Biochemistry, Cell and Molecular Biology, Chemistry, Computer Science, Economics, Education, Engineering, Geology, History, Literature in English, Mathematics, Music, Physics, Political Science, Psychology and Sociology.
