The GRADUATE MANAGEMENT ADMISSION TEST (GMAT) is required for admission to most U.S. and Canadian MBA programs. GMAT is also used for admission to Masters or PhD programs in business major, such as Finance, Accounting and Marketing etc. The GMAT measures abilities in four broad categories: Verbal, Quantitative, Integrated Reasoning and Analytical Writing.
The GMAT consists of four sections:

Analytical Writing Assessment (AWA): This section requires test-takers to write an essay analyzing an argument.

Integrated Reasoning (IR): This section tests skills in data analysis, data interpretation, and problem-solving.

Quantitative Reasoning (QR): This section tests math skills in arithmetic, algebra, geometry, and data analysis.

Verbal Reasoning (VR): This section tests reading comprehension, critical reasoning, and sentence correction.
The total testing time for the GMAT is three and a half hours, and the test is administered on a computer. The test scores range from 200 to 800, with most test-takers scoring between 400 and 600. The test scores are valid for five years.

GMAT Quantitative Ability (Mathematics)
The GMAT quantitative section is often referred to as the Mathematics section. It tests your basic understanding of arithmetic, algebra, fractions, probability and geometry.
Quantitative Question Types
- Problem Solving: This section involves traditional computational skills, and includes arithmetic, algebra, and geometry concepts. You will need to know the necessary facts and formulae for this section.
- Data Suff iciency: Questions in the Data Suff iciency section consist of a Math problem fol lowed by two statements, which might lead you to the answer of the problem. You need to choose which of the statements (if any) is suff icient to solve the problem. Along with your math knowledge, this section will require a sense of logic.
GMAT Verbal Ability
Your success in this section will depend on your ability to read and fully comprehend written material, reason and evaluate arguments and your familiarity with the stylistic conventions and grammatical rules of written English.
Verbal Question Types
- Reading Comprehension: Passages of up to 350 words are followed by several questions. The questions are intended to assess a test taker's ability to interpret the passage, draw inferences from statements in the passage, and draw logical relationships between different points in the passage.
- Sentence Correction: These questions test your English language proficiency and ability to express an idea that is clear, concise and grammatically correct.
- Critical Reasoning: These questions measure the ability to draw conclusions from short arguments. The arguments are much shorter than Reading Comprehension passages and the questions have a different angle.
GMAT Integrated Reasoning
The Integrated Reasoning section is designed to measure a test taker's ability to interpret data from a variety of sources, and draw meaningful conclusions from this information. By testing multiple scenarios in various ways, Integrated Reasoning questions measure your higher-order thinking skills (such as your ability to sift through tedious details to determine which data are most relevant in decision-making, or to organize information in a way that makes it more accessible and valuable toward a specific objective), not just how well you can memorize content.
The Integrated Reasoning section of the GMAT exam will consist of 12 questions. There will be four main types of questions in the Integrated Reasoning section:
- Table Analysis: You will review a table of data (similar to a spreadsheet, but with very little functionality) and use this information to evaluate a series of "True/False" statements.
- Graphics Interpretation: You will analyze a graph or information in an image, and then complete a series of statements using drop-down menus.
- Multi-Source Reasoning: You will click through several tabs containing information in various forms (including text, charts, and graphs). You will then answer a series of "Yes/No" questions based on the information.
- Two-Part Analysis: You will need to take two different sources of information and piece them together to answer the question asked.
